April 9, 2014

After you save big on Washington Wizards tickets with ScoreBig.com, you’ll have extra money to have great healthy food before, during and after the game at the Verizon Center. The Wizards didn’t get to the playoffs by luck this season- it took a lot of hard work, sacrifice and effort. You don’t always have to succumb to the usual arena food that you find so frequently. Luckily, we’ve located the best spots for that inside and around the Verizon Center so you can catch the game more quickly. Let’s take a look at what we found…

INSIDE THE ARENA

If you’re a healthy eater looking for the perfect in-game eats, this is the place you need to be. The have options of the vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free variety in the form of sandwiches, fruit, soups and salads.

This stand is more known for its burgers, fries and hot dogs, but they also feature some snacks like fruit, pretzels and peanuts.

OUTSIDE THE ARENA

Juice Joint Café – 1025 Vermont Ave, NW

This great spot just outside the arena has something for all the vegans, vegetarians and meat eaters for all breakfast, lunch and dinner. Recommended for breakfast is the Turkey Bacon & Potato Wrap – two organic eggs, red bliss potatoes, turkey bacon and cheddar cheese on your choice of tortilla. For lunch and dinner, you should try the Jerked Chicken Wrap – grilled chicken rubbed Jamaican Jerk spices, mango salsa, lettuce and tomato. Also try the Grandwich – avocado, tomato, cucumber and sprouts served on toasted multigrain bread with mayo and mustard.

Brown Bag – 1st St. NW, 14th St. NW, 18th St. NW, 20th St. NW

This restaurant prides themselves on “honest food” using the freshest and most natural ingredients in their dishes. The Steakhouse Salad – romaine lettuce, grilled steak, red/green peppers, red onions, blue cheese, potatoes, almonds, fried onions and their house Dijon vinaigrette- is the top-selling item at Brown Bag. Also try the Golden Gate Grill sandwich- roast beef, artichokes, red peppers, caramelized onions and Dijonaisse on Sourdough.

Sweetgreen – 14th  St. & W, 19th St. & L

This newly-developed chain is great if you’re looking for healthy food quick and on-the-go. For starters try one of their Earth Bowls- warm grains, organic arugula, roasted chicken, white cheddar cheese, grape tomatoes, raw corn, spicy broccoli and topped with a pesto vinaigrette. If you like some kick in your dish, also try the Spicy Sabzi- organic baby spinach, shredded kale with spicy quinoa, spicy broccoli, carrots, raw beets, basil, sprouts and roasted tofu topped with a carrot chili vinaigrette and a little bit of sriracha.

Chop’t Creative Salad – 7th St. NW

This rapidly growing stop features tremendous items on their menu and is a huge favorite with the locals. That is mainly because their large portion of their menu can be morphed into either a salad or sandwich. Two of the highly recommended are the Chop’t Po’ Boy- FreeBird panko fried chicken, tomato, red onion and white cheddar cheese with romaine lettuce, and the Steakouse- naturally raised steak, tomato and fried onions with romaine lettuce.
